Regulatory Environment
California has enacted some of the most comprehensive foodservice packaging regulations in the United States. Understanding what these laws actually require — and what they do not — matters for procurement.
Effective January 1, 2022
Requires food facilities and delivery platforms to provide single-use foodware accessories and condiments only upon customer request. This applies to all materials — plastic, compostable, bamboo, and paper. AB 1276 does not mandate compostable products. It reduces automatic accessory usage. Catalina Supply's catalog includes accessories appropriate for request-only service.
Permanent rules effective May 1, 2026
California's Extended Producer Responsibility law targets 25% reduction in single-use packaging and 65% recycling rates by 2032, with all packaging recyclable or compostable by January 1, 2032. Producer registration requirements are active as of June 1, 2026.
Effective January 1, 2025
Expanded polystyrene (foam) foodservice ware is prohibited in California. Bagasse, molded fiber, and paper containers are the primary compliant alternatives. Catalina Supply stocks EPS-replacement options across all container categories.
Note for San Diego operators — BPI-certified compostable products are accepted at Republic Services composting facilities. Check with your local hauler for specific requirements — compostable items are not accepted in all green waste programs.
